SAVING FOR A TRIP

Saving for a trip, without missing the departure.

A trip comes down to two figures: what it costs, and when you leave. The rest follows: how much to put aside each month, and where you should be today.

How much to put aside?

Change the amount and the date: the pace follows.

TO PUT ASIDE

€280 a month

or €65 a week

Departure on 15 August 2027

Your goal, as a boarding pass.

What the trip costs

Count generously, item by item, before setting the amount:

  • travel: the flight or the train, and getting to the station or airport;
  • accommodation, night by night;
  • there: meals, local transport, visits;
  • before leaving: passport or visa, insurance, gear;
  • a margin of about 10% for the unexpected.

The total becomes your goal’s amount.

Choosing the date

The goal’s date is the day the money must be there, not always the day you leave. A flight is often paid months ahead, accommodation when you book.

If a big expense comes early, bring the goal’s date forward, or make it a goal of its own: the flight first, the stay after.

Keeping the pace

  1. Put money aside on payday, not at the end of the month: what is left at the end of the month is rarely what was planned.
  2. Note all progress, even small: 20 € counts, and the route moves on.
  3. A hard month? Look at where you stand: catch up 60 € next month, or push the departure back a week, it is your call.

An example

€2,800 in 10 months is €280 a month. Halfway there, €1,400 should be put aside: that is when you know whether you are on time.

How much should you save each month?
